Preparing Spawning Beds on The Letort

Feet In the Stream

Every fall, we come together with rakes in hand to prepare the known spawning areas on the Letort. Raking the beds, also known as redds, helps enhance the success of the spawning season for the Letort’s famous wild brown trout by removing sediment from the gravel.

What are Redds and How Do you identify them?

Look for clean, oval-shaped patches of gravel that are lighter in color than the surrounding gravel. Redds are often found in shallow, moving water, such as in the tail outs of pools, along banks, or in gravelly glides.

In addition to raking, it’s important to avoid damaging or killing eggs and fry by not wading through redds or fishing to actively spawning trout. Hooking spawning fish can disrupt their ability to breed.
