CVTU Volunteers Share Conservation with Local Students at Mooreland Elementary

One of the most rewarding parts of Cumberland Valley Trout Unlimited’s mission is introducing young people to the outdoors and helping them understand why healthy streams matter.

On Friday, May 22, 2026, four CVTU members volunteered at Mooreland Elementary School’s annual Health and Wellness Fair, where they spent the day talking with Carlisle students about fishing, conservation, and the importance of clean water.

Representing Cumberland Valley Trout Unlimited were Jerry Loudon, Nancy Yurik, Ken Okorn, and Crystal Williams, who spent the day introducing students to the importance of clean water, healthy fisheries, and the lifelong enjoyment of fishing.

Students learned how water quality affects trout and other aquatic life, what makes a healthy stream, and why protecting local waterways benefits both wildlife and the people who enjoy them. Many were surprised to learn how closely fish populations depend on clean, cold water and healthy stream habitat.

The event also gave students a chance to learn about fishing. Volunteers answered questions about trout, fly fishing, aquatic insects, and the different places to fish throughout the Cumberland Valley. For some students, it was their first exposure to the sport and the conservation work that supports it.

Opportunities like this allow CVTU to connect with the next generation outside of the stream. By sharing knowledge and encouraging curiosity, we hope to inspire young people to appreciate the natural resources that make our region special.

The chapter would like to thank Mooreland Elementary School for inviting us to be part of this year’s Health and Wellness Fair. We also extend our appreciation to the four chapter members who generously volunteered their time to represent Cumberland Valley Trout Unlimited and our mission.

Education has always been an important part of Trout Unlimited. Whether it is speaking in classrooms, hosting youth fishing events, restoring local streams, or participating in community events like this one, CVTU is committed to building a future where healthy fisheries and clean water continue to thrive.
