The History of Fly Fishing in the Cumberland Valley

Presented by Bill Skilton

The Cumberland Valley is widely recognized as one of the birthplaces of American fly fishing. Long before modern fly-fishing techniques became popular, legendary anglers were refining their craft on the limestone waters of the LeTort Spring Run, Yellow Breeches Creek, Big Spring Creek, and Falling Spring. The innovations developed on these waters continue to influence fly anglers around the world today.

Join Cumberland Valley Trout Unlimited for a fascinating evening with Bill Skilton, one of Pennsylvania’s foremost authorities on the history of fly fishing. Bill has spent decades preserving the stories, people, and traditions that shaped our sport and has learned directly from legendary Cumberland Valley anglers including Charlie Fox, Vince Marinaro, and Ross Trimmer. Today, he serves as President of the Pennsylvania Fly Fishing Museum Association, where he helps preserve the rich heritage of fly fishing in Pennsylvania for future generations.

During this presentation, Bill will explore:

  • The origins of fly fishing in the Cumberland Valley
  • The anglers who forever changed the sport
  • How limestone streams like the LeTort, Big Spring, Falling Spring, and Yellow Breeches became world-renowned
  • The development of influential fly patterns and techniques that are still used today
  • Why the Cumberland Valley remains one of the most historically significant fly-fishing destinations in North America

Whether you’ve spent decades fishing these waters or are just beginning your fly-fishing journey, this presentation offers a rare opportunity to better understand the remarkable history that exists right here in our own backyard.

Come early, enjoy fellowship with fellow anglers, and discover why the Cumberland Valley continues to hold a special place in the history of American fly fishing.

We look forward to seeing you there!
