CVTU Fishing Trip: Tulpehocken Creek

Join Cumberland Valley Trout Unlimited for a day of fishing on one of Pennsylvania’s premier tailwater trout fisheries, Tulpehocken Creek. This popular outing offers anglers the opportunity to explore productive trout water, learn from fellow fishermen, and enjoy a day on the stream with members of the local fishing community.

Located near Reading, Pennsylvania, Tulpehocken Creek is widely recognized for its healthy trout population and year-round fishing opportunities. The section we will focus on is the tailwater fishery below Blue Marsh Lake, where cold, nutrient-rich water released from the bottom of the reservoir creates ideal trout habitat.

Blue Marsh Lake was created in 1978 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a flood control project. The dam’s bottom-release design draws water from depths of up to 50 feet, maintaining cooler water temperatures throughout the year. These stable conditions support approximately four miles of high-quality trout water below the dam, providing excellent habitat for both brown and rainbow trout.

Anglers can expect a mix of riffles, runs, and deeper pools that reward a variety of fishing techniques. Nymphing is often productive throughout the year, while streamers and dry flies can also be effective depending on conditions and seasonal insect activity.

Whether you’re already familiar with the Tulpehocken or looking to fish this famous tailwater for the first time, this trip is a great opportunity to experience one of Pennsylvania’s most unique trout fisheries alongside other anglers.

As with all CVTU Fishing Trips, this outing is open to everyone. You do not need to be a member of Trout Unlimited to participate. Friends, family members, and anglers of all experience levels are welcome.
